Black Architect is an interdisciplinary team of designers and architects dedicated to exploring organic form through natural materials and sustainable design practices. Our practice experiments with natural materials, construction techniques, and design methods to explore how architecture can enter into dialogue with its context. Informed by traditional knowledge and driven by innovation, we seek ways of building that respond to place and community.

Our studio emphasizes using local materials that vary depending on the project's location. These include wood, reclaimed timber, rammed earth, stone, limestone, and other natural materials. We believe ecological balance and harmony in design stem from engaging with locally sourced materials.

Our design approach begins by listening to the land. Through land studies, we observe the site's climate, terrain, and natural systems, allowing the environment itself to shape the foundation of the design alongside client needs. We embrace local building techniques, materials, and regulations, blending our work with artisanal craftsmanship and legal compliance. Our projects are not just constructed but thoughtfully integrated into their surroundings, leaving a lasting positive impact.

Black Architect provides architectural design, master planning, and construction services. From the scale of intimate homes to large public spaces, we focus on sustainable solutions and natural materials. Our work often begins with masterplanning, where we study the land and its potential to create frameworks that guide not only buildings but entire environments.

We mainly work in the design and building of residential homes, villas, retreat centers, boutique hotels, eco-villages, and commercial spaces. However, if you have a unique vision for a new type of space, we enjoy new architectural challenges.

We don't offer interior design services. However, we can refer you to experienced interior designers we've worked with before.

At Black Architect we follow a conscious design process, moving from the first idea and concept development to construction and its administration. Each stage has defined priorities and deliverables, and we advance step by step without skipping what is essential. This ensures continuity, clarity, and the right foundations for the next phase.

The completion time for our projects varies based on the type and scale. For houses and villas, the architectural design phase typically spans around 3 to 5 months, while for larger projects like retreats and hotels, we usually require about 7 to 8 months. It's important to note that these timelines pertain only to the architectural design aspect. The construction duration can be determined after the design stage is concluded, as it depends on various factors, including the design's complexity, land location, and the project's square footage.

Our close relationship with natural materials, ecosystems, and traditions has allowed us to learn, experiment, and innovate with sustainable building methods. This combination of traditional wisdom and contemporary research has deepened our understanding of how natural materials can shape architecture. Natural materials offer a powerful contextual response: they carry cultural meaning, support sustainable practices, and contribute positively to the environment. At the same time, they enable low-energy design solutions, uniting tradition, ecology, and contemporary architecture.

The completion time for construction projects varies. For bungalows to small villas, it typically takes 6 months to a year. For larger-scale projects, the timeframe can vary significantly and requires a detailed evaluation to provide an accurate estimate. Each project is unique, and we tailor our approach to meet its specific demands and challenges.

Construction costs vary significantly based on location, materials, and project complexity. From the beginning, we open a conversation with our clients to understand their vision, expectations, and budget. This helps us adapt the design and guide material selections so that costs remain aligned with what they want to achieve. As the design develops, we refine the estimate to reflect the specific details of the project.

To oversee the construction phase, our studio starts with a kick-off meeting that includes the construction management team, contractors, and all consultants. This meeting ensures everyone understands the project details, schedules, and any areas that might need clarification. Throughout construction, the management team checks and approves each completed task, updating our architecture team and clients on a weekly basis. If any issues come up that might change the design, the building contractors create detailed shop drawings. Our architects then review these drawings to provide guidance and give the necessary approvals.

Sustainability for us begins with an interdisciplinary approach. As architects, we act as mediators, exploring how design relates to the elements of each site, its water, air, soil, surrounding ecosystems, and community. It goes beyond the choice of sustainable materials: it is about understanding the circularity of resources, where they come from, and how they return to the environment. Through research and collaboration with experts, we define strategies that respect these relationships. From the start of every project, we share with our clients a clear plan of sustainable options shaped by the specific context of the place.

We begin by studying the land itself, its conditions, resources, and traditions, so the design grows out of its context rather than being imposed on it. This means learning what materials are available locally, which construction techniques make sense, and how to adapt these choices to your vision and expectations. From there, we are guided to make design decisions that minimize impact while supporting efficiency, durability, and harmony. By aligning every step of the process with the site and your goals, we ensure your project is not only environmentally responsible but also deeply rooted in place.

Designing with natural materials offers both immediate and long-term cost benefits. Locally available resources, such as wood, earth, or reclaimed materials, not only reduce transportation costs but also support regional economies. Over time, sustainable design helps lower operating expenses by enhancing natural ventilation, insulation, and overall energy efficiency. This means reduced utility bills and fewer maintenance costs throughout the life of the building. Beyond financial savings, sustainably built projects often gain higher property value and stronger market appeal, making sustainability both a responsible and rewarding investment.

Our fees are tailored to each project. The first stage, which covers feasibility studies and concept design, begins with a 40% payment. As the project develops, the next 30% is due at the Design Development stage, and the final 30% at the Construction Documents stage. This structure follows the natural rhythm of the design journey, with each step aligned to clear milestones.

Our architectural services cover the full design journey, beginning with Feasibility Studies, where we include masterplanning, land studies, and conservation strategies to understand the potential of the site. From there, we move into Concept Design, Design Development (DD), and finally, Construction Documents (CD). It's important to note that our fees focus on architectural services. External specialists such as interior designers, structural and MEP engineers, or landscape architects are not included, but their contributions are essential for a holistic project. We often collaborate closely with these professionals to ensure the vision is fully realized and integrated across all disciplines.

The cost of a project depends on a variety of interconnected factors. It begins with the client's vision and expectations, which guide the scale, purpose, and level of detail in the design. The complexity of the structure, the materials and finishes selected, and the construction techniques required also play an important role. Site-specific conditions are equally significant, such as the topography of the land, its accessibility, and the location of the project. Additional considerations, like sustainability strategies, locally sourced materials, or innovative construction methods, can also influence the overall investment.

No, we don't charge for an initial consultation. To make the conversation meaningful, we ask that clients already have their land (owned or leased), a clear construction budget, and an initial program that outlines the spaces or functions they envision. This helps us understand the project better and prepare for a focused discussion. We also value this first step as an opportunity for both the client and our studio to see if we feel aligned in vision and approach before moving forward together.
